Highly regarded, modern, Impressionistic painter whose hallmarks are his vibrant use of colour and an ability to ‘capture’ natural light

Gordon Radford was born in Oldham, near Manchester, in 1936.  He studied fine art and design at the Oldham School of Art  (1951-53) and then trained as an industrial designer before becoming an engineer in 1957 - although he continued painting throughout this time.  His early artistic influences were John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) and Sir Alfred Munnings (British, 1878-1959), influences which are still evident in his work.

During the 1970s Gordon met Carl Cheek (British, born 1922) and Jack Patterson of the Royal College of Art, London, with whom he toured and painted in and around Manchester and Salford, focussing primarily on industrial scenery or, by way of a complete change, creating gloriously rich and luminescent still life paintings.

In 1972, Radford was the winner of the Artist Magazine International and, in 1975, he was elected a Member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA).

In the 1980s, Radford was attracted to the paintings of the famous East Anglian artist Edward Seago (British, 1910-1974).  He subsequently painted many Norfolk land and seascapes as well as coastal scenes around the British Isles and also developed a great love for Venice, which he has visited frequently.

From 1993-98, he exhibited frequently at the Royal Institute for Oil Painting in London as well as the Manchester Art Gallery, the Mall Galleries, London, and many private galleries throughout the North West of England and in Scotland.

Radford paints in an Impressionistic style which is characterised by the use of vibrant colours, broad brushwork and an ability to ‘capture’ natural light.  His subject matter ranges from landscapes, to still lives, to portraits, architectural subjects, lavish interiors, coastal views, shorescapes and views at home and abroad, especially his beloved Venice.  His work is represented in many private and public collections.
