Casper was born in 1903 at his parents' home at 18 Fitzroy Street, London, the second of John’s five sons by his first wife, Ida (née Nettleship)
 
He rose to become Admiral of the Fleet Sir Casper John GCB. He was a pioneer of the Fleet Air Arm; Vice-Chief of Naval Staff to the First Sea Lord, Lord Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, in 1957; and subsequently First Sea Lord, 1960-1963
