A significant contemporary artist whose impressionistic work is to be found in many public and private collections.

 

Born in Birmingham in 1938, Freer trained at the Bournville School of Art and the Birmingham College of Art.  In addition to many solo exhibitions, he has been a member and annual exhibitor at the Pastel Society since 1982, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters since 1987, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours since 1989, and the New English Art Club since 2000.  He is also a lecturer on the appreciation of painting and drawing, has featured in many publications.  He lives and works in Sudbury, Suffolk.

 

Freer has gained a number of prestigious awards, including the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours' RI Bronze Medal (1986); the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Cornelissen Prize (1986 and 1997); Pastel Society Soar Prize (1990); Mature Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (1991); the Catto Gallery Award (1992); the Royal Institute of Oil Painters' Llewellyn Alexander Award (1994); the C. Roberson Prize (1995); and the Stanley Grimm Prize (1997).

 

Freer’s vibrant and impressionistic paintings, with their bold use of colour, skilful painterly quality and fine draughtsmanship can be found in many public and private collections.
