Ciro CANZANELLAItalian, born 1948 |
An exceptional colourist with the ability to evoke the dazzling light and colour typical of the Mediterranean
Ciro Canzanella was born in Naples, Italy, in 1948. Fascinated by art from an early age he was a frequent visitor to the studios of well-known local artists and subsequently studied at the Naples Academy of Fine Arts (founded in 1752 and one of the oldest art academies in Europe) but left to follow his own path and paint directly from real life, which he considered “the best of teachers”.
He held his first solo exhibitions in Milan and Monaco in 1976, followed by participation in a group exhibition in Germany. These were followed by solo exhibitions in Modena in 1980 and Ferrara in 1981, both of which confirmed his growing artistic reputation.
In 1985 his artistic stature was recognised when he was invited to participate in an exhibition held in Paris dedicated to important modern and contemporary Italian artists including Giorgio de Chirico (1888–1978), Renato Guttuso (1912-1987), Giacomo Manzù (1908-1991), Salvatore Fiume (1915-1997), Aligi Sassu (1912-2000) and Renzo Vespignani (1924-2001). Participation in this exhibition confirmed his already respected standing in the art world.
Canzanella has travelled widely in Italy and worked in Capri, Sorrento, Positano and Naples. Considered by art critics as one of the last representatives of the Neapolitan Impressionist school, he is recognised as an exceptional colourist with the ability to evoke the dazzling light and colour typical of the Mediterranean, which he portrays with great individuality in his townscapes, coastal scenes and landscapes.
He has achieved widespread recognition both nationally and internationally and continues to live and work in Naples. His work can be found in galleries in Italy and around the world and he is particularly popular in the United States.
